Chovu is living Kenyan culture. Strong influences from traditional rhythms, legends, and spirituality combine with wild black metal. Founded in 2021, the band has been inspired by subgenres such as thrash and black metal since its inception. They see Chovu as a sword against the sometimes untenable political and social conditions in their country, against the dogmatic and pervasive religiosity, against neocolonialism, and rampant inequality.

Chovu is an expression of their otherness. „We didn‘t feel like we belonged to any of the dominant subcultures,“ so they say, „so we created our own.“

The band as a whole also embraces this DIY spirit. Music videos and albums are produced and recorded in-house, and costumes and outfits are created independently.

The band performs live with face paint and in traditional costumes.
